Known by its generic name Mercaptopurine and also called as 6-mercaptopurine or 6-MP, this drug has been used in the treatment acute lymphatic (lymphocytic, lymophoblastic) leukemia,Mercaptopurine with its brand name as Purinethol has displayed in vitro efficacious results with resistance to Mycobacterium paratuberculosis. Some of the brand names of Mercaptopurine are Purinetone, Empurine and Mercapto. Mercaptopurine (Purinethol) is a thiopurine and is an immunosuppressive drug with ts chemical name as 6H-purine-6-thione, 1,7-dihydro-, monohydrate and it is an analogue of the purine bases of hypoxanthine and adenine.

Varying from patient to patient, Mercaptopurine(Purinethol) can be prescribed as a single dose ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 mg/kg/day.This may be increased to after 4 weeks to 5 mg/kg/day. The dosage may be reduced in case of renal impairment and by 75% if accompanied by allopurinol administration.
